The Battle of Hobkirk's Hill (also known as the Second Battle of Camden) was a battle of the American Revolutionary War fought on April 25, 1781.

The area of the battlesite is reputedly haunted by a headless horseman. The identitiy of this phantom is unknown, with accounts varying as to whether he was a British soldier or Patriot officer. However, it is claimed that in the heat of battle the rider was decapitated by a cannonball, and the horse proceded to charge onwards to its death in the Black River swamp.

On foggy nights that cover a full moon, the headless phantom on horseback is said to rise from the swamp and ride around the area.
